Virtual Exhibition - Newtown Drawings
1998-2000
During the late 1990’s and early 2000’s I was preparing painting exhibitions held at the Australian Galleries Sydney.
As preliminary investigations for the larger paintings I made many drawings, sometimes it involved using photography combined with collage, but always underpinning everything was the making of Drawings. During this time, I was also preparing some of this material for a potential exhibition of works on paper, which never properly materialised as the main painting shows always seemed to take precedence.
As a unifying format I used Stonehenge paper, as it was malleable to different techniques and approaches and remained durable to a wide range of techniques. Stonehenge paper also came in several different paper tones which was useful as it provided a base tone.
At the time I was experimenting with a layered graphite and semi opaque wash technique which I still employ. I also investigated the use of Japanese sumi Ink.
On recent surfacing of archive material, I have decided to release a selection of these Drawings from 1998-2000, as a Virtual Exhibition.
Some of this material was intended for exhibition at that time. Now presented is a selection of these works for the first time.
Some of the drawings have minor surface defects that you might expect with age.
