The artwork was made during the Artists residency, during the time of the 58th Venice Biennale.
The work was intended as a very dark image where details of historical references slowly emerge from the darkness in a very close tonal range. Harking back to earlier nocturne paintings. It was also the intention that the image almost resembled Malevich's black square as a direct reference to modernism, "Malevich's conceptual completion", arguably and simultaneously the beginning of modernism (and minimalism), where the concerns of painting ceased to be an illusion, "as a window on a world" but instead became the art object in itself.
Due to the careful individual hand wiping of each impression, each print varies slightly
