Australian-born, London-based artist, produces paintings that primarily deal with the built environment, especially urban spaces.
Drawing on the history of painting in the Western tradition, to explore ideas around memory and perception as they relate to the architecture and topography of modern cities. Through the layering of different painterly styles and techniques, Brown produces work that reveal the traces of the past in the present moment, forming visual ‘timelines’ in a single picture.
Martin Brown has a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Diploma of Fine Arts from the National Art School, Sydney, Australia. After exhibiting extensively in Australia, he relocated to London in 2003. since then, he has held solo shows in London, Basel, Paris, and most recently an independent solo show in Venice, that opened concurrently with the opening of 58th Venice Biennale.
In 2016 was awarded ING Discerning Eye Founders Purchase Prize
